Intellectual Property and Innovation Ecosystem Sector (IES) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is inviting institutions in Member States acting as intermediaries to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to complete a short online survey on the nature and extent of intellectual property (IP) support services provided by them to businesses and SMEs in particular. Such institutions include government institutions that support SMEs, business associations, chambers of commerce, business support organizations, incubators, technology parks, accelerators, innovation agencies, export development agencies, organizations that support startups etc.
Even where these institutions are not providing IP services to SMEs, WIPO would still invite them to indicate their interest, if any, in providing such services.
SMEs are crucial actors in the economic development of a country and for those SMEs that are innovative, technology based, export oriented or operating in niche markets, the IP system is particularly relevant for their competitive strategy. Understanding the IP system is also crucial from a management perspective ensuring that SMEs understand the risks in ignoring the IP system when operating in an environment where much of the products, processes and creative works are proprietary.
The information collected will be made publicly available in a database which will enable local SMEs to identify sources of support and obtain the support they need.
